Scripture Readings:

  • Isaiah 66:13 (NIV): “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”

  • Psalm 91:4 (NIV): “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”

Mother’s Day can stir a mix of emotions. For some, it’s a day of joy, celebrating the gift of motherhood or honoring beloved mothers. Yet for others, it’s a tender day—marked by the ache of a mother’s absence, the longing for children, the grief of loss, or the sting of regret over past mistakes. Some mothers feel unseen, yearning for their children to acknowledge the love and sacrifices poured out over years, despite imperfections. Wherever you find yourself today, know that God sees you, and His nurturing heart holds you close.

Motherhood, whether through biology, adoption, or caregiving, is a journey of profound love and relentless challenges. From the moment a child enters our lives, they depend on us entirely—for nourishment, comfort, and care. Those early days of sleepless nights, endless diapers, and soothing cries can feel overwhelming. I remember when my daughter was born, with an 18-month-old at home and my husband working nights. Exhaustion was my constant companion. I’d call him at work, desperate for advice as she refused to sleep, rendering every parenting tip useless. All I wanted was rest—for her and for me!

Beyond exhaustion, motherhood often carries a hidden cost: loneliness. A Harvard study found that 51% of mothers with young children experience “serious loneliness.” Our worlds shrink as we navigate naps, snacks, and bottles, while social media paints a picture of friends thriving in ways we can’t. Even as children grow, each stage brings new, unpredictable challenges, leaving us wondering if we’re “doing it right.” Yet, day after day, we show up, loving fiercely through it all.

Reflect on God's nurture on this Mother's Day: Motherhood becomes a window into God’s heart. Isaiah 66:13 reveals God’s promise to comfort us as a mother comforts her child—tenderly, faithfully, without condition. Psalm 91:4 paints a picture of God shielding us under His wings, a refuge of faithfulness. Though we may falter as imperfect mothers, God’s care is perfect, extending to us and our children. This truth also embraces all women who nurture—mothers, aunts, mentors, friends, caregivers. When you pour out love, even without recognition, you reflect God’s grace, showing up just as He does for us.

Reflection Questions:

  • How has God comforted you in moments of need, like a mother tending to her child?

  • When has God shown up as your refuge? Have you paused to thank Him or offer your heart in return?

  • Is there a “spiritual mother”—a woman who has loved and guided you sacrificially? How might you thank her this Mother’s Day for her care?

This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate the beauty of nurturing love while holding space for those who carry pain. Reach out to a woman who has shaped you—tell her she’s seen and valued. Trust that God’s nurturing heart is big enough to hold every joy, sorrow, and sacrifice.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your nurturing love that sustains us all. Bless every woman reading this—those who mother children, long to, or pour out love in countless ways. Comfort those who carry pain today, and help us reflect Your care and compassion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thank you for this post for moms. It is so true and so needed. Though a nana now, I remember the struggles and the blessings. God is faithful. He helps us in the night. -Carla
